As always intended, Erykk is nearing his ultimate homecoming to Maplewood. He'll grace our fields and enjoy the benefits of maturity and respect, overseeing his foals coming into their own on our farm. For the the 2012 season however, we are taking advantage of opportunities present at Illahee, a state-of-the-art training facility just outside Portland, Oregon.

Forest Nealon, the manager/trainer at Illahee, is one of the Pacific Northwest's most colorful and enthusiastic Morgan trainers, specializing in the animated divisions winning World Championships for his loyal clientele. Maplewood counts ourselves in his "loyal" following - coming back to complete Erykk's journey here in Oregon, together with Forest, returning fifteen years since our last visit!

Enjoying our long standing and successful relationship with Forest Nealon, we will rekindle our hands-on interest in Erykk. Caitlin Sause, our daughter who trained with Forest in preparation for her National wins, once again now has the proximity and time to pair with Erykk. This team has known success previously and we look forward to new goals!

Eastman MF (Erykk MF x Especialley by Tempter) has joined the ranks of Ellis Supreme Arabians of Idaho Falls, ID. His presence results in the third Erykk MF colt for their farm, the first purebred. He joins, Mister Twister and E-Jack Daniels both out of DHH mares. Look for them in the show ring beginning in 2012.

Maplewood proudly announces the acquisition of the sensational trotting mare Shreddin Betty. Sired by AA Apollo Bey, and a full sister to National Winners Lah Lah and Doubly Blessed, this mare is destined for greatness. We are excited to breed Shreddin Betty to Erykk MF this year, and see a bright show and breeding career in the future for this talented young mare.

In the image of his sire IXL Noble Express, our newest colt displays early signs of a great English athlete. Not only is he poised, confident, and beautiful, but he has a motor to drive his motion way UP, and a pedigree suggestive of the kind of lasting quality we expect to see as he matures. Drawing from the Polish strength of MHR Nobility, *El Ghazi, and *Bask from his sire, we also see the supreme atleticism of his dam's sire Medalion, and the beauty of Negatraz and his granddam, the great *Gitara, written all over him. In a strong showing of exceptional colts at Region IV, G was named Top 5 Breeders Sweepstakes Purebred Yearling Colt. A future contender in Saddleseat divisions, G showed his extremes in this class, with powerful motion at the trot, a long and exceptionally shaped neck, expressive character, and stength through his smoothly built frame, set atop long clean legs. We are thrilled with this colt and are excited to see him to future successes. Special thanks to Tara Boresek, Aude Espourteille and Mike Hartman for your wonderful training and presentation of G.

It is with great excitement that we announce Erykk MF's homecoming to the West Coast. Building on Guy Benefield's unique training techniques honed at Lasma, Erykk's move to Sherman Ranch in Pleasanton, California, under the tutiledge of Mitch Sperte, we will see these same methods utilized. Remembering a Gene LaCroix seminar in 1975 at Denver, "That seminar changed my whole perspective," recalls Mitch. "I was mesmerized by Gene's training theories. His theory of teaching the horse to move away from pressure offered a whole new approach to schooling and achieving collection." We hope to have a seamless transition from one master to another commanding the reins of Erykk.

Mitch Sperte has over 30 years experience as a respected Trainer and Judge. He was a founding director of the Arabian Professional Horseman's Association in 1984 and earned the coveted title of Horseman of the Year in 1996. Specializing in the English division, Mitch brings to Sherman Ranch the skills Maplewood wants to employ to capture Erykk's and our talented young stock's peak performances.

Maplewood horses competed against Mitch's barn and competitors in the late 80's and early 90's; if you didn't bring your "A Game" you were going to get the gate - BEHIND his highly disciplined team. Kathy Foss sums up a description of Mitch nicely, "Mitch's conscious commitment to the profession has allowed him to uniquely integrate the art form with the science of the sport."

With the obvious benefits of proximity to our farm, Sherman Ranch is within driving distance so we can more closely manage the current and specific needs of our upcoming show string. We thank Guy Benefield, Jeanne Johnson and AVS Equine for their years of expert management of Erykk and now look to build upon these successes. Breeding responsibilities for Erykk will now transfer to the most capable hands of Cory Soltau DVM of Pleasanton, California.

 

A vision in white, Benraz Magnifique is a supreme example of the type and ethereal elegance that made the Arabian horse famous. Persistent pursuit of this rare Echo Magnifficoo daughter finally came to fruition at Scottsdale 2011. We believe that quality is no accident, and in the case of Magnifique, it is the result of generations of carefully planned breeding by Cory Soltau DVM of Blackhawk Valley Arabians. Known for their cultivation of some of the breed’s finest bloodlines, including their foundation mare TW Forteyna, leading dam of Champions in the United States , and her National Champion daughters by Bey Shah (Shahteyna and Bey Teyna), their contribution to the Arabian breed is undeniable. Magnifique is no exception! The mare's unique pedigree, size, structure and carriage offer a complement to our existing herd; utilizing these traits, we hope to breed tomorrow's Arabian from the best of the past.

Congratulations to the Wagner Family for their purchase of the lovely Gyselle (Medalion x *Gitara PASB). Gyselle will be bred to Erykk MF before being flown to Anchorage, Alaska to begin her new life as the foundation mare for the Wagner's breeding program. Gyselle and Danielle are looking forward to beautiful endurance rides in the scenic Alaskan wilderness. We are looking forward to accepting their invitation to jet-ski in the Prince William Sound in the company of orcas, sea lions and porpoises! Be well forever Gyselle!

In 2010, Maplewood will start off the year recognized as a Heritage Breeder in Arabian Horse World’s January edition. Mary Jane Parkinson has invited Maplewood to be honored with her story.

AVS Equine Veterinary Hospital showcased Erykk MF in a feature article they sent to all clients concerning the fine art of collecting and shipping transported semen. The success of this depends greatly on the management of  the stud’s live cover and careful coordination communicating with mare owners on shipment needs. Guy Benefield and Jeanne Johnson working in professional conjunction with AVS have achieved a 94% conception rate, covering 33 mares in 2008 & 2009.

Ashley Bibby has joined the Maplewood team with the grace and talent of an upcoming star. She assists in all manners with the farm management and training of the horses. Formerly with Joel Gangi, Ashley has shown to numerous national wins. She has now brought her skills to Maplewood with success at two shows already.  In September she showed Rockefeller MF to the highest score earned by a purebred in all Sport Horse Divisions and was the last person to ride Hallelujah Bey +// in his long show career spanning twenty years. He was retired after this handsome ride – he is 25 years old.

In early October, noted Polish photographer and equine artist make the trek to our remote Oregon farm. For three days he endured the coastal mist, which hampered his photography skills. He captured the spirit of the farm and the horses in spite of the obstacles. We look forward to his September ’09 return! Twice Canadian National Reserve Champion Stallion, multi-Regional Champion Stallion, English Pleasure Champion as well as a sire of National winners in halter and performance, GITAR continues to bring recognition to the innate excellence of the Maplewood breeding program.
